Simon St. Pierre

Click here to view a 13 minute movie about the life and music of Simon St. Pierre filmed in December of 1976.  After showing it to family and friends, this film sat in storage for nearly 30 years.
It was made with Super 8 mm cameras using Kodachrome film.  A separate  home-adapted Super 8 mm full coat recorder was used for the sound.  A month later the separate film and audio full coat tapes were edited together using a four gang synch block.  I mention all this because younger people, having grown up with hand held video cameras, computers, hard disk recorders, and the internet may take for granted things like having your sound and picture synchronized, filming in low light, or not having enough film for a longer song...
It wasn't so easy back then.  Film cartridges had two and a half minutes of film at sound speed.  (24 frames per second)  So, planning was an absolute must!  Film was expensive.  Low budget Super 8 film was very grainy.  Of all the Super 8 films available, Kodachrome gave the highest resolution.  But, it was very slow.  We had to bring several high wattage photoflood lamps into Simon's house for all of the interior shots, and blew a fuse or two...
The weather was the coldest I have ever experienced in my life.  It averaged eight degrees below zero the whole time we were there.
But, my memories of this trip, Simon & his family, and making the film are all very warm ones.
